Are you sitting comfortably, then I’ll begin…….. This is informational content for all who have an interest in Art, Pattern, Textiles and Colour. -

Below are 5 Global Female Visual Artist who use #colour and #pattern in their artwork.

As a Surface Pattern Designer and Contemporary Visual Artist, I am always looking for inspiration for my art and patterns. My go to resources would be a collection of photographs that I use for ideas, drawings I make, moodboards that I may have created, Art books, photography, the natural environment, museums and Art galleries.

A reference source that I always turn to are visual artists who have incorporated colour and pattern into their work. I like all types of artists but for this piece I thought it would be a good idea to give you an idea of 5 global female visual Artists who have inspired me.

I use them as a source of inspiration, like a visual jolt to kick start my own thoughts, feelings and imagination.

Nike Davies Okundaye

(B-1951-) Nigerian Textile Designer and Artist

African Art, Textiles-Adire, Painting

Nike Okundaye studied Textile Design via the traditional route in Nigeria , this would include Weaving and Dyeing (Adire), and would also mean being apprenticed at a young age to an older experienced relative. Nike is a passionate and experienced designer, so much so that she has art galleries in Nigeria- including - Lagos, Abuja, and Ogidi-Ijumu.

She has a rich painterly style to her work, decorative with lots of overlays of patterns and colours. Her work is influenced by her cultural traditions and rich Nigerian - Yoruba heritage.

Anni Albers

Weaving, Textiles, Modern Art

Anni Albers - Like so many female artist of her time, she had to enrol on ‘soft/feminine’ courses like weaving, when she enrolled at the Bauhaus art school in Germany. But this did not deter her deep study into colour, textiles and proportions within the subject areas that she specialised in. She initially concentrated on weavings through which you get an idea of her creative process and involvement in art, design and architecture. In later life she explored prints and drawings.

Her deep research into the language of weaving lead to a very modern style which has had a profound influence within the Textile and Arts fields.

Tate Modern is currently running an exhibition of her work - on till the 27th January 2019

Bridget Riley

Op-Art, Painter

Bridget Riley is one of Britain’s best known painters for her celebrated Style called Op-Art. She came to prominence in the 1960’s and has been exhibited around the world in Art Galleries and Museums ever since.

Her Art style incorporates , geometry, Colour interaction on 2D surfaces these merge to give optical illusions that appear to move across the surfaces. Op Art is the name given to this art style. Bridget Riley is a significant female artist who is still working and exhibiting. This year 2019, the National Gallery (London) unveiled a huge wall painting of hers. Tate and its various galleries around the UK presents some of her works within their art rooms and organise exhibitions of her various collections. Yayoi Kusama

Yayoi Kusama is a Global artist whose works runs across a range of artistic genres. She works in Installation, Sculpture and paintings but also performance, film and poetry. Kusama has been creating works since the 60’s and has gained worldwide recognition and is finally being celebrated . Her work is prolific and she has the ability to work consistently for days.

Kusama is known for her Dots, Nets and mirrored surfaces all brightly coloured. She is open about her mental issues and uses those as a source of inspiration for her wide ranging art works. There is a psychedelic quality to much of her work.

Tess Jaray RA

Painter, Geometry, Colour Perspective

Jaray studied Fine Art at St Martins and the Slade School of Art in London. Her work is characterised by the interplay of geometry, perspective, form and colour, across 2 dimensional surfaces resulting in thoughtful patterns and shapes which draws the viewer in.

She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions. Her work lends itself well to architectural expression, and has a painterly perspective. It comes at no surprise that later on in her career she took up public commissions such as creating Terrazzo floor pattern designs for the London Victoria Station and other public architectural commissions. She is an Honorary Fellow of RIBA ( Royal Institute for British Architects).

Female artists are under represented in the art Institutions, two artist who had retrospectives in London 2019, were Faith Ringgold and Lee Krasner, power houses in their art fields, both exhibitions were detailed and brilliant.
